WASHINGTON – There has been an outpouring of support following a major theft at a Salvation Army office in Southeast D.C. Sunday.
Thieves broke into the Solomon G. Brown Corps Community Center and stole around $10,000 worth of Red Kettle donations.
Since then, generosity has repaired the damage, and then some.
“It is great to see the response. It is certainly satisfying for us,” says Maj. Lewis Reckline, commander of the Salvation Army National Capital Area Command.
Donations continue to roll in.
“The Claude Moore Charitable Foundation gave a check to our overall program for $10,000,” says Reckline.
Attorney Tom Goldsten wrote a check for $10,000 as well. Wal-Mart also donated $15,000.
An additional $10,000 donation from Koons, as part of the dealership’s 25 days of giving, will be made Wednesday afternoon.
Meanwhile, there is progress tracking down those responsible for the crime.
According to Reckline, people have contacted the Salvation Army after viewing surveillance footage, saying they know who the suspects are.
“They felt pretty confident that they could create an identity,” says Reckline.
Police are still investigating.
